Victorian Burl Walnut and Brass-Mounted Writing Slope with Inkwells – c. 1870

A richly detailed Victorian writing slope or desk set, circa 1870, fashioned from fine burl walnut with ebonized edging and ornate brass-mounted accents. The domed upper compartment is adorned with intricately pierced brass hardware featuring applied cabochon mother-of-pearl insets, creating a striking contrast against the burled grain. The box opens to reveal a vivid royal blue silk-lined compartment perfect for storing letters or writing accessories.

The base features a fitted pen tray flanked by two original cut-glass inkwells with brass lids, resting in custom recesses. Below, a pull-out drawer offers additional storage for writing supplies or correspondence. The set stands on rounded feet and includes a working lock and key with a black silk tassel.

A functional and decorative desk accessory, this piece epitomizes the romanticism and craftsmanship of the Victorian era, ideal for display in a study or gift for a collector.

Dimensions:

Approximately 12.5” W x 9” D x 10.25” H

Condition:

Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. Some minor cosmetic wear to the brass and edges, one area of ebonized trim shows a small surface split, not affecting integrity. Inkwells are intact.
