Mid 18th Century English Pendant Portraits of a Gentleman and His Wife, Circa 1740–1760
Later Housed in Early 19th Century Giltwood Frames
A striking and deeply romantic true 18th century pendant pair, sourced in England by Elijah and me, and preserved together for over 250 years. Portraits like this were commissioned to hang side by side, capturing not just likeness, but legacy, meant to live together for generations.
Both works retain their original oval format and are now housed in beautifully detailed giltwood frames dating to the early 19th century, likely added during a later period of preservation when these paintings were already considered important enough to update and protect. Finding a true pair that has remained together through centuries like this is becoming increasingly rare.
The backs tell the story beautifully, with early construction, age consistent materials, and visible signs of long term care and structural preservation. You can see the layers of time in them, collected, maintained, and carried forward through generations.
Pieces like this are what we search for. Not just decorative, but emotional. They hold a presence the moment you walk into a room. The kind of pieces that anchor a space and start conversations.
Whether placed in a formal setting, layered into a gallery wall, or given a moment of their own, they bring that old world, lived in elegance that cannot be replicated.
Sold as a pair.
Measures approximately 40 inches in height, 33 inches in width
Condition:
Relined at a later date. Expected age related wear throughout including surface wear, craquelure, and imperfections to the frames including minor separations and losses consistent with age. Structurally sound and ready to hang.
