Thaïs by Anatole France
Illustrated by Georges Rochegrosse
Engraved by Eugène Decisy
Librairie des Amateurs A. Ferroud, Paris
1909

A beautifully produced fine press French illustrated edition of Thaïs by Nobel Prize–winning author Anatole France, published in Paris in 1909 at the height of the Belle Époque. This edition was created for collectors, pairing literature with high-level artistic collaboration, a hallmark of Ferroud publications.

The volume is illustrated with fifteen compositions by Georges Rochegrosse, known for his dramatic historical and orientalist imagery, here translated into richly detailed etchings by Eugène Decisy. The result is a book that reads as both literature and visual art, with each plate adding depth and atmosphere to the narrative.

This example is part of a limited edition, numbered No. 848 from a run of 1,200 copies printed on vélin d’Arches, a fine handmade paper favored for deluxe publications. These editions were issued in tiers, with this being a highly desirable collector grade printing.

Bound in vellum with gilt titling to the spine and finished with beautifully marbled paper boards and endpapers, the craftsmanship reflects the refined aesthetic of early 20th century French bookbinding. Every detail, from paper to print to binding, was designed with intention and care.

Published during a period when books were meant to be collected, displayed, and cherished, this piece represents the intersection of literature, art, and craftsmanship.

Condition
Very good antique condition
Light wear consistent with age and handling
Binding remains strong and structurally sound
Interior clean with beautifully preserved plates
