Carl Kauba (Austrian, 1865–1922)

“The Betrothal”

Gilt bronze on carved marble base

Signed C. KAUBA, circa 1890

This exquisite 19th-century bronze and marble sculpture group, “The Betrothal,” is a superb example of Carl Kauba’s refined academic style. Depicting a tender classical scene, the composition shows a young couple seated upon a stepped marble bench at the moment of their engagement. The youth leans forward, delicately placing a ring upon the woman’s hand, while she rests against him with serene affection. Scattered roses at their feet further underline the theme of love, devotion, and idealized beauty.

Cast in hot-cast gilt bronze using the traditional cire perdue (lost-wax) method, this sculpture displays all of Kauba’s hallmarks: beautifully articulated drapery, graceful anatomy, and a soft, luminous gilded surface. The modeling of the figures—especially the gentle tilt of the heads and the naturalistic folds of their garments—testifies to the exceptional craftsmanship that made Kauba one of the most collectible Austrian sculptors of his era.

The figures are mounted on a solid white marble plinth, whose clean classical lines provide an elegant visual counterbalance to the warmth of the gilt bronze. The work is signed C. KAUBA on the base, confirming its authenticity.

A romantic, finely executed sculpture with strong presence, ideal for collectors of Austrian bronzes, Belle Époque works, or classical revival pieces.

Condition: Excellent antique condition with minor age wear. The gilt bronze retains its rich, warm patina; marble base is clean and stable.
