Victorian Gilt Brass Figural Vase with Griffin Handles & Cut Glass Liner
England
Circa 1870–1890

A bold and highly decorative Victorian vase, cast in gilt brass and richly adorned with scrolling foliage and classical ornament. The form is tall and tapering, with a pierced crown like rim and a sculptural presence that immediately commands attention.

The body is flanked by opposing griffin figures, mythological guardians symbolizing strength and protection, forming dramatic handle elements at the midsection. Below, the base is wide and stable with pierced detailing and raised feet, grounding the piece visually and physically.

It retains its original removable cut glass liner, allowing it to function beautifully for fresh florals while protecting the metal interior. The combination of warm gilt brass and sparkling cut glass is exactly what defines strong Victorian decorative design.

Pieces like this were made to be seen. Mantels. Entry tables. Centerpieces. They were never subtle.

Condition
Good antique condition
Age related wear with areas of gilt thinning
Losses and cracking to portions of the pierced rim consistent with age
Glass liner intact
Structurally sound and displays beautifully

Why We Love It
It is dramatic in the best way. The griffins, the scale, the layering of textures. It feels collected, intentional, and full of personality. And the fact that you can actually use it makes it even better.
