French Napoleon III Double Scent Casket

Monogrammed “ML”

Circa 1860–1880

France

A beautifully refined and deeply personal Napoleon III dressing table casket, veneered in rich burl wood and framed with ebonized trim and delicate brass inlay. The lid is centered with a gilt cartouche bearing the monogram “ML,” a detail that transforms this from a decorative object into something intimate and commissioned for a specific individual.

The craftsmanship reflects the height of 19th century French decorative arts. Each element was executed by hand, from the book matched burl veneer to the finely set brass stringing and gilt bronze mounts. The base is finished with beaded trim, and the front features a shaped escutcheon, all contributing to its elegant and balanced design.

The interior retains its original silk lining, fitted with two wells designed to hold scent bottles or toiletry jars. Currently housed inside are later French Guerlain Paris jars, marked “Made in France,” likely mid 20th century additions. While not original to the casket, they fit beautifully and speak to the continued life and use of the piece over time.

Originally, boxes like this would have held crystal perfume bottles, silver topped jars, or personal grooming essentials, often given as wedding gifts, trousseau pieces, or meaningful presentation objects.

There is a quiet history to this piece. It was made for someone. It was used, kept, and adapted. And that layered life is exactly what gives it depth today.
