Complete Set of Round Carlisle Cross
By James Walter Brown
Carlisle, England
Circa 1920s
With Author Presentation Inscription (1925)

A complete and deeply personal set of Round Carlisle Cross, a series of locally grounded historical sketches centered on the city of Carlisle and its surrounding region. Issued in parts during the 1920s, the series builds into a continuous narrative preserving the stories, character, and lived history of one of England’s most historically layered border cities.

Carlisle, positioned near the Scottish frontier, carries centuries of Roman, medieval, and cross-border history. Works like this were not created for mass audiences but for those connected to the place itself — capturing its streets, people, and memory in a way only local authors could.

What elevates this particular set is the inscription.

At the front, the author James Walter Brown presents the set to Charles W. Robinson, described as “his old friend,” given in gratitude for “many kindnesses,” dated Carlisle, January 1925. It is not a formal dedication, but a personal one — and that distinction matters.

This transforms the set from simply a historical publication into a piece of lived history. It ties the book directly back to its author, its place, and a real relationship within that community.

Complete runs of regional works are increasingly difficult to find. Add to that a genuine author presentation, and it becomes something far more meaningful.

Condition
Very good vintage condition
Expected age wear to bindings and pages
All volumes present and cohesive
Inscription clearly legible

Why It Matters
It holds two histories at once, the printed story of Carlisle and a personal moment within it.

Quiet. Personal. And increasingly rare in this complete and connected form.
