19th-Century English Papier-Mâché Jewelry & Needlework Cabinet

A true gem of Victorian craftsmanship, this exquisite 19th-century English papier-mâché box was originally created as a lady’s needlework and jewelry cabinet. Its striking exterior features intricate gilt decoration and mother-of-pearl inlay, framing an inset panel painted with a scenic view titled The Cilician Gates—a historic mountain pass in southern Turkey known since antiquity.

The two front doors open to reveal a suite of small drawers, each bordered with delicate inlay and fitted with original knobs, surrounding an arched central compartment. Above, the hinged lid lifts to reveal a vibrant moiré satin-lined tray with multiple compartments for storing fine jewelry or sewing implements.

Standing on a beautifully scalloped base and adorned throughout with lush florals and gold scrollwork, this piece was not only functional but a symbol of refined taste in the Victorian parlor.

A rare survivor of its time—ideal for collectors of 19th-century decorative arts, lovers of Grand Tour–era romanticism, or anyone who values fine historic storage furniture with a touch of enchantment.
