Jan Luyken, The Martyrdom of St. Pelagius of Córdoba

Dutch School, Circa 1685–1690

Etching on paper

A powerful and deeply moving 17th century etching by Jan Luyken, one of the most celebrated Dutch printmakers of the Baroque period, known for his hauntingly detailed religious scenes and his work for Martyrs’ Mirror.

This composition depicts the martyrdom of St. Pelagius of Córdoba, capturing the moment just before execution with striking emotional intensity. The young saint stands bound yet resolute, his body marked by suffering, while figures around him prepare for the final act. Luyken’s ability to balance brutality with quiet spiritual strength is what makes his work so enduring, drawing the viewer into both the narrative and the deeper symbolism of faith and sacrifice.

The engraving is rich with fine line work and layered detail, from the expressions of the surrounding figures to the architectural elements and weaponry, all executed with the precision and storytelling mastery for which Luyken is known.

The reverse inscription further supports the identification of the subject and artist, referencing St. Pelagius and Jan Luyken, along with a late 17th century dating. Pieces from this series are highly collected for both their devotional significance and their place within early European printmaking.

Presented in a classic gilt frame with matting that complements the work without overpowering it, ready for display.
