French Gilt Bronze Hand Mirror with Portrait Miniature on Ivory
Circa 1880–1900
France

A beautifully romantic late 19th century French hand mirror, cast in gilt bronze and richly detailed with flowing foliate ornament and an elegant crest, embodying the softness and refinement of the Belle Époque.

At the center sits a finely painted portrait miniature on ivory, depicting a young woman in 18th century aristocratic dress. The delicate brushwork, luminous surface, and gentle modeling of the face are characteristic of true ivory miniatures, prized for their warmth and lifelike quality. The subject reflects the enduring fascination with the Louis XVI period, with powdered hair, jeweled adornment, and soft pastel drapery evoking the elegance of an earlier century.

The mirror retains its original beveled glass, showing light age appropriate wear and subtle spotting consistent with period use. The reverse construction and materials align with fine French vanity objects of the late 19th century.

Both functional and decorative, it can be styled on a dressing table, layered into a vignette, or hung by its loop as part of a curated wall.
