Victorian Presentation Dressing Case – Dated 1865 – Captain Charles Butler
A rare and historically rich Victorian gentleman’s dressing case, presented in 1865 to Captain Charles Butler Dunf by John Martin & Co. of Belfast, in recognition of faithful service. This extraordinary example of mid-19th-century craftsmanship blends elegance, utility, and personal history into one distinguished object.
The box is veneered in beautifully figured walnut with ebonized edging and a mother-of-pearl diamond cartouche. Inside, the case is outfitted with a complete suite of silver-plated lids and fittings, along with original glass jars, some of which are finely engraved. The hinged tray lifts to reveal a hidden compartment lined in rich blue velvet, with a fitted drawer beneath for jewelry, documents, or grooming accessories.
An engraved ivory plaque on the interior lid reads:
“Presented to Captain Charles Butler Dunf by John Martin & Co. for faithful services in their employment. Belfast, May 1865.”
Highlights:
- Original velvet and silk linings in striking royal blue
- Secret compartment and fitted drawer with velvet-lined sections
- Original mirror under the lid with storage behind
- Intricately engraved silverplate lids with some glass bottles present (note one jar is broken)
- Rich burlwood veneer with ebony and mother-of-pearl inlays
- Lock present, key not included
This piece offers not only refined Victorian design but also tangible historical significance—ideal for collectors of antique vanity boxes, maritime memorabilia, or presentation gifts of the 19th century.
