Victorian Mother of Pearl Parasol Handle Magnifying GlassMonogrammed MOF, Circa 1880–1900
Description
A beautiful Victorian magnifying glass created from a late nineteenth century parasol handle, crafted in gilt brass and inset with luminous mother of pearl panels. The handle is richly decorated with repoussé detailing and terminates in an engraved cap bearing the elegant script monogram “MOF.”
During the Victorian era parasols were essential accessories of fashionable dress, and their handles were often crafted from luxurious materials including mother of pearl, gilt brass, ivory, and carved wood. When parasols fell out of fashion in the early twentieth century, many of these finely made handles were repurposed into desk accessories, most commonly magnifying glasses, allowing the craftsmanship of the original object to continue to be enjoyed.
The proportions and construction of this example clearly reflect its origins as a parasol handle, while the magnifying lens transforms it into a striking library or writing desk accessory. Pieces like this display beautifully styled atop antique books, on a desk, or within a study where they add both function and historic character.
Date:
Handle circa 1880–1900, later converted to magnifying glass.
Condition:
Good antique condition with age appropriate patina to the brass and normal wear consistent with age. Lens intact and functional.
