Victorian Traveling Tantalus and Vanity Box, England, circa 1870 to 1890

An exceptionally rare and unusually complete Victorian traveling tantalus in oak with brass mounts, retaining four matching cut crystal decanters, original beveled mirror, and its original lift out interior tray.

Compact tantalus forms of this kind were made in far smaller numbers than their larger counterparts, as they were intended for private travel use rather than stationary display. Because of this, they were more vulnerable to loss, breakage, and separation over time. It is highly unusual to find one at this scale that still retains all four original decanters, the mirrored interior, and the removable tray intact.

The cabinet is crafted in richly toned English oak and mounted with brass hardware in the campaign style, reflecting the portability and refinement expected of luxury travel goods in the late 19th century. The interior is thoughtfully arranged with four finely cut crystal decanters with faceted stoppers, positioned before a beveled mirror that enhances light and brilliance. Below, a fitted satin lined compartment with its original lift out tray offers space for glasses, grooming implements, or personal effects.

Everything about this piece speaks to discretion, elegance, and movement. It was designed for someone who traveled well and expected their surroundings to reflect that.

The scale is intimate, but the presence is not. It reads as both a functional object and a jewel like cabinet, making it equally suited for a bar, dressing table, or curated collection.

Measures approximately 7.5 inches in height, 8.5 inches in depth and 10 inches in length

Condition

Very good antique condition. Light wear to the oak and brass consistent with age. Crystal decanters intact with minor wear. Interior lining shows age but remains clean and functional. Mirror intact.
