French Gilt Bronze Jewelry Casket with Portrait Miniature on Ivory
Circa 1890–1910
France

A beautifully detailed Belle Époque gilt bronze casket, richly adorned with neoclassical garlands, scrolling ormolu, and a finely worked engine turned ground. At the center, a hand painted portrait miniature on ivory depicts an 18th century beauty in the manner of Marie Antoinette, adding a layer of romance and historical nostalgia to the piece.

The miniature itself is softly rendered, with the luminous quality unique to ivory, far more refined and desirable than later paper examples. It sits against a warm salmon toned silk ground, enhancing the femininity and softness of the overall design.

The casket is raised on four ornate feet and retains a substantial weight and presence, reflecting the quality of late 19th century French casting. The interior remains lined in its original silk, clean and well preserved, intended to hold jewelry, letters, or personal keepsakes.

Marked France to the base, the piece was created for export during the height of the Louis XVI revival, when French makers produced romantic interpretations of the 18th century for an international market.
