French Neoclassical Gilt Bronze and Cut Crystal Casket
Circa 1890–1910, Belle Époque period
France
A beautifully refined French trinket casket combining heavy cut crystal with finely cast gilt bronze, capturing the elegance and storytelling of the Belle Époque in miniature form.
The octagonal crystal body is sharply cut with beveled panels and a thick faceted base, giving it both weight and brilliance. It is mounted in gilt bronze ormolu, detailed with a continuous laurel band along the rim and richly cast classical frieze panels that wrap the body.
At the center, a seated classical female figure rests beside a flaming urn, flanked by draped maidens holding garlands. The level of detail in the casting, from the softness of the drapery to the delicate expressions, reflects the quality associated with French decorative bronze work of the late 19th to early 20th century.
Raised on four turned gilt bronze feet, the piece has a sculptural presence despite its scale. It feels both decorative and intimate, the kind of object that would have lived on a dressing table among treasured personal items.
The crystal is thick and beautifully cut, consistent with period French production rather than later reproductions, giving the entire piece a sense of authenticity and permanence.
Condition
Very good antique condition with light age appropriate wear
Gilt bronze retains a warm patina
Crystal remains clear and well preserved with minor wear consistent with age
No major damage observed
A jewel like object with the presence of a sculpture, full of detail, history, and quiet luxury.
