French Rococo Revival Petite Fireplace Screen
Circa 1880–1900
France
A striking late 19th century petite fireplace screen, richly cast in gilt bronze and detailed with an ornate Rococo Revival composition. The central frame features a dramatic lion mask flanked by scrolling acanthus, with a classical female mask below, creating a layered sculptural presence rarely seen in smaller scale pieces.
The fan form screen opens in a radiating pattern of finely pierced brass panels, each delicately worked to allow airflow while softening the intensity of the fire. The lace like metalwork adds both function and visual lightness, contrasting beautifully with the weight of the cast bronze structure.
Crowned with a pineapple finial, a traditional symbol of hospitality, and set on an elaborately scrolled base, this piece blends decorative symbolism with practical design. Screens of this scale were often used for smaller hearths, bedroom fireplaces, or as refined decorative accents in salons and sitting rooms.
The patina is warm and dimensional, with darker undertones accentuating the depth of the casting and highlighting the intricate detail throughout.
Condition
Very good antique condition
All panels intact and functioning
Surface wear and patina consistent with age
Structurally sound with strong presence
This is one of those pieces that feels like jewelry for the hearth. Sculptural, detailed, and incredibly decorative.
