Rare Oversized Antique Book-Form Tantalus with Baccarat Decanter & Lalique Glasses

France, Early 20th Century

A true cabinet of curiosities disguised as literature—this extraordinary antique tantalus is crafted in the form of a towering stack of 18th- and 19th-century leather-bound tomes, each spine gilt-stamped in French. Concealed within is a hidden speakeasy treasure: a fitted interior housing a square Baccarat decanter with its original stopper and a charming assortment of nine cordial and shot glasses, including etched and frosted examples attributed to Lalique.

The decanter bears the acid-etched Baccarat hallmark, and the ensemble is beautifully presented against a maroon leather-lined interior with gold tooling. The remarkable book-motif exterior, constructed of leather over wood, speaks to the period’s fascination with bibliophilic disguise and secret compartments.

Details:

• French, c. 1920s

• Baccarat decanter with acid-etched mark

• Nine crystal glasses including two Lalique cherub-motif shots

• Book-form case crafted from antique leather tomes

• Interior: red leather with gilt tooling

• Condition: Gentle wear to books consistent with age; glasses and decanter in good antique condition

A magnificent conversation piece for collectors of antique barware, literary décor, or French objets de vertu.
