French Napoleon III Ormolu & Glass Jewelry Casket
Circa 1855–1880
France, mid to late 19th century, Napoleon III period.
A finely cast gilt bronze (ormolu) circular jewelry casket with pierced scrollwork, beaded trim, domed glass lid, and original tufted silk cushion interior. The lid features a central framed glass reserve inset with an embroidered textile medallion.
These textile medallions were often included to give the piece a more personal touch. In some cases they reflected current fashion fabrics, bridal textiles, or decorative motifs chosen for the recipient. Caskets like this were frequently given as wedding or engagement gifts, designed to hold rings, brooches, and small jewels while displaying them safely under glass.
They would have sat on a dressing table, combining storage with presentation.
Today it works just as well for heirloom jewelry, a meaningful keepsake, or styled as a decorative accent in a layered interior.
