French School “Circassian Lady at the Bath”
Circa 1845–1860
Oil on canvas
France

A romantic and highly collectible mid 19th century oil painting depicting the well known subject Circassian Lady at the Bath, rooted in the Orientalist and romantic imagery that captivated European audiences during this period.

The composition reflects a subject popularized around the mid 19th century, often associated with widely circulated works such as those by George Baxter, whose prints inspired painters across Europe. French artists translated these compositions into oils, bringing depth, atmosphere, and painterly softness to what began as decorative imagery.

The figure represents the idealized “Circassian beauty,” a theme tied to the 19th century fascination with the Caucasus and the broader Orientalist movement. These works were never intended as literal depictions, but rather poetic interpretations of femininity, set within lush, imagined landscapes.

Here, she emerges through reeds, pausing mid movement with her arm raised to shield her gaze, creating a sense of immediacy and quiet narrative. The floral garland, soft drapery, and exposed neckline reflect the period’s language of softness and allure. The palette is warm and tonal, with rich greens and golden undertones that enhance the overall atmosphere.

Unlike printed examples, this work shows clear painterly handling, with visible brushwork and layered tones that give it depth and presence. It firmly sits within the category of 19th century studio or workshop oils inspired by earlier print sources.

Housed in a period gilt frame with simple stepped molding, allowing the subject to remain the focal point.
