Carl Knoll Hand-Painted Porcelain Portrait Plaque, Carlsbad, Late 19th Century

A superb late 19th-century hand-painted porcelain portrait plaque by Carl Knoll, Carlsbad. The central portrait depicts a young woman in elaborate traditional attire, her head crowned with a garland of roses and adorned with a jeweled cross pendant. The portrait is exquisitely detailed, capturing both lifelike expression and refined costume. Surrounding the portrait is a striking black ground encircled with hand-painted roses in full bloom, framed by an intricate gilt and geometric border.

The reverse bears the impressed mark of Carl Knoll, Carlsbad, one of the most esteemed porcelain manufactories in 19th-century Bohemia. Founded in 1842, the Knoll factory gained renown for producing high-quality artistic porcelains, particularly portrait plaques and decorative chargers. During this period, Carlsbad porcelain was widely collected across Europe, favored by aristocracy and wealthy travelers who flocked to the famed spa town of Carlsbad, making such pieces both luxurious souvenirs and prized objects of display.

Condition: Excellent for its age, with only minor surface wear. The colors remain vivid, and the painting is finely preserved.
