George Fowler (British) circa 1890–1902

“Coastal Breakers with Gulls”

Oil on canvas, signed lower right

Presented in an impressive giltwood frame

This atmospheric late-19th-century seascape by George Fowler captures the raw beauty of the British coastline at its most dramatic. Fowler, an active marine painter, was known for his ability to render the force and movement of the sea with sensitivity and technical confidence. This work is a superb example of his style.

Waves crash rhythmically against jagged cliffs, rendered with a beautiful blend of translucence, foam, and motion. A flock of gulls sweeps across the sky and hovers above the surf, bringing life and movement to the composition. The rugged, mist-coated rock formations in the background add depth and atmosphere, drawing the viewer into the drama of the coastline.

Fowler’s brushwork is expressive yet controlled — from the swirling whitecaps to the textured rock surfaces — and his palette of cool greens, blues, and earthy browns evokes the shifting moods of the sea. Marine paintings of this scale and quality were sought after in the Victorian period for their power, serenity, and sense of nature’s grandeur.

The painting is housed in a magnificent, deeply carved giltwood frame, richly ornamented and perfectly suited to the scale and presence of the piece. This frame alone is a substantial decorative element and enhances the painting’s overall impact.

Condition

• Canvas is structurally sound with original texture and strong coloration.

• Two small punctures to the paint surface (shown in photos) — one near the rocks, one in the sky — both typical of antique canvases and easily repaired if desired.

• Frame shows minor age wear and touch-ups consistent with period

A commanding and beautifully rendered marine painting by George Fowler — ideal for collectors of coastal artwork, Victorian British painting, or anyone seeking a dramatic, statement-making landscape.
