Antique French Mixed Media Painting with Decoupage Figures, 19th Century

A charming and unusual 19th century French genre scene painted in oils with applied decoupage elements. The composition depicts a romantic moment in a garden setting: a couple in 18th-century attire flirts before a flower seller seated behind an abundant floral cart. The faces and forearms of the figures—traditionally the most expressive and technically demanding elements—have been collaged in, using printed or hand-colored paper appliqués, a decorative technique known as décalcomanie or decoupage. This playful mixture of media was popular in the mid to late 19th century and adds a unique, whimsical touch to the piece.

Set in a richly carved and gilded wooden frame with deep cove molding, foliate detail, and an antique patina. The frame has wear consistent with age, including some corner loss and gesso chipping, particularly along the lower edges and corners (as shown). The original wooden panel backing is intact.

Condition:

Overall good condition for age. The painting surface has age-related craquelure and wear. The frame shows losses and touch-ups. Decoupaged elements are securely affixed, with some mild surface wear.

A rare and evocative decorative work perfect for lovers of French romanticism, mixed media, or period interiors. Found in France.
