Antique French Black Lacquer Jewelry / Sewing Box with Floral Miniature, 19th Century
A refined mid-19th century French jewelry or sewing box, crafted in glossy black lacquer with gilt bronze mounts and fine detailing. The rectangular form rests on turned feet and is framed with molded beading. The hinged lid is beautifully adorned with an inset hand-painted floral miniature under glass, framed by an ornate gilded surround of Rococo-inspired scrollwork. Additional gilt bronze appliqués and delicate incised linework enrich the surface, adding elegance and contrast against the black ground.
The box opens to reveal a spacious interior with two fitted front drawers, designed for storing jewelry, sewing implements, or personal treasures. Retains its original working key with a decorative tassel, a rare survival that enhances its appeal and completeness.
These boxes were highly fashionable in 19th-century France, serving both as functional personal items and as luxurious decorative accessories displayed in salons and boudoirs. The artistry of the miniature painting, paired with the high-quality lacquer and mounts, reflects the craftsmanship associated with French decorative arts of the period.
Condition: Light surface wear and age-related cracks to the lacquer, consistent with age and use. The miniature painting is beautifully preserved, retaining vibrant color and detail.
