19th-Century Italian Pietra Dura Book and Inkwell Set with Gilded Bronze Mounts

Found in Paris

A striking marriage of opulence and craftsmanship, this rare 19th-century Italian writing set features a matching gilded bronze album and inkstand, each adorned with inset pietra dura panels of exquisite floral marquetry. The pietra dura technique—an ancient Florentine art form developed during the Renaissance—involves inlaying finely cut and polished semi-precious stones into black marble (nero belgio) to form intricate designs, often botanical. Here, delicate white blossoms bloom with naturalistic charm, accented by turquoise buds and olive-toned leaves.

The book’s cover is richly embossed with Rococo-style scrollwork and medallions, framing three pietra dura plaques. Inside, the album retains its original pages, now fragile with age and ink-stained from use—a testament to its 19th-century life, perhaps as a grand tour souvenir or cherished guest book. The coordinating inkstand features the same floriate stonework, with inkwell compartments and pen rests integrated into the ornate gilt base.

Condition: The internal pages are in delicate condition with visible water and ink damage, though structurally sound. Exterior gilt bronze and pietra dura elements remain in very good condition with minor age-appropriate wear.

Dimensions: Book approx. 12.5” H x 10” W | Inkwell approx. 10.25” W x 3.5” D
