19th-Century French Gilt Metal Jewelry Casket with Porcelain Plaque

France, circa 1860–1890

An exquisite mid–late 19th-century French jewelry casket, crafted in richly pierced gilt metal and centered with a hand-painted porcelain floral plaque. The lid features roses and garden flowers in soft pastel tones, framed by delicate gilding work consistent with Paris porcelain workshops producing plaques for luxury decorative objects.

The casket opens to reveal an original deep red velvet interior, including the underside of the lid, creating a striking contrast with the gilded exterior.  Designed for jewelry, letters, or treasured personal items, pieces like this were intended for the dressing table or escritoire.
