French Rococo Revival Bronze Hand Mirror

Circa 1880–1900

France

A beautifully sculptural late 19th century French hand mirror, cast in solid bronze and designed in the Rococo revival taste. The frame is richly detailed with flowing Louis XV style scrollwork, accented by a striking grotesque mask at the base of the handle, adding both character and drama to the piece.

The oval mirror retains its beveled glass, set within a deeply cast surround that gives it weight and presence. The reverse is fitted with a bronze backing secured by period screws, a detail that speaks to its quality and construction.

During the Belle Époque, bronze dressing table objects were prized for their durability and refined appearance. Unlike lighter brass or later decorative alloys, bronze pieces like this were meant to be used and kept, developing a warm, natural patina over time.

There is a richness to this piece that immediately stands out. It feels substantial in hand, with a tone and depth that only true bronze can offer. The kind of object that elevates a dressing table into something far more atmospheric and collected.
